This doesn't sound to me like a big enough job to justify any tractor purchase. Moving 60 yards of dirt can be done in a few hours with the right equipment and an experienced operator. A dozer could do it over a short distance, or a track loader and dump truck over a longer one. Your job would probably only cost a few hundred dollars.

Cub Cadet would not be my choice for holding value on an investment of this kind, either. Some dealers in my area are dropping Cub Cadet because they can't move the equipment like they can John Deere, New Holland, and Kubota.

I almost forgot that it paid for me to shop around for my blower. Two dealers less than 3 miles apart were 25% apart in price.

Have you checked out the Pronovost web site to make sure your dealer offered you the right model?

Alan, there is a lot to think about. My wife and I cleared about 8 acres of scrub from our property before we decided where to put the house, etc. Unfortunately, I discovered that she was unwilling to avail herself of nature when nature called. We did everything in 2 hour shifts when she came along. You should think about what you will need prior to construction, during landscaping, and for ongoing maintenance; a JD 4100 w/ belly mower and turf tires sounds great for maintenance but might not be a good fit before that. Consider hiring out work too heavy for a compact tractor. You can't really use a finish mower on rough ground even if only grass grows there, and the finish mower isn't intended to cut grass much taller than 6 inches. I think you should think about where you would keep your equipment when you weren't there, or are you planning to truck it in and out all the time?

I live in Western New York. I have had a 75" Meteor 3 point blower for 3 years. I would not want a bigger blower on my 40-ish HP tractor. Cost about $1500. Works very well, but is not as sturdy as a plow. I did break it once; it cost about $100 to get a new auger sprocket, chain and bearing. How many times per year do you clear more than 6" of snow? I find that by February I generally take off the blower and put a blade on the tractor because it isn't worth trying to blow 3" of snow. I did put it back on for the storm you mentioned, though. We got about 12", and I blew out my 500' driveway in 15 minutes, and I didn't have to worry about where I was going to put it. It can be very uncomfortable to blow snow into the wind on a tractor without a cab, though.

My Dad used a loader-mounted plow for many years on a Ford 8N. It was quicker than a back blade or blower when there was only a few inches of snow. It was better able to deal with a lot of snow than a back blade because you can pile the snow higher. It would probably be better for a large parking lot than a blower, too, but I don't think yours is big enough to be a problem.

FYI - Even King Kutter says their carry-all is not for pallets. You are expected to deck the carry-all with a lumber platform. They make a pallet mover from rectangular steel tubing that they claim will support 2000 lbs. 24" out from the 3 point frame.

I suspect that the name "Boomer" refers to the target market, not the tractor itself.

Actually, the last of the 9N's were produced in 1941, and 2N production was started prior to 1942.

I grew up with a 1952 8N, and while you can get a lot done with it if you are patient, persistent, and mechanically inclined, you can get better, newer tractors for the same or not much more money. With that said, if my brother would give it up I would be happy to give my grandfather's 8N a permanent home.
I would only buy a 9N or 2N if no other tractor was available that would do the work and fit my budget.

Things you will not be able to do with a 9/2/8N:

Brush hog slow - 1st gear is too darn fast.
Precisely control implement height on 9/2N - draft control only.
Pick up PTO-driven implement without running PTO or disconnecting shaft (PITA).
Run a standard 3 pt. snowblower - bad gearing and dead PTO.

I'm pretty sure the RM59 is intended to be a belly mower for older tractors (e.g. Ford 8N). I think it only has gauge wheels in the rear. A real PITA to get on and off.

I would not worry about draining the gravel. As long as the slope drains away from the building on all sides you shouldn't have any problems. One thing you might want to consider is a geotextile between your earth/fill and the gravel to prevent mixing. Of course, this will depend on your local conditions.

Gauge wheels on a rake are pretty helpful because of the short wheelbase of the tractor, and the position of the rake. The whole tractor can act like a see-saw that causes the rake to lift when the front wheels go into a dip, and vice versa. Gauge wheels can substantially reduce this effect.
